🩵 Human Story of the Week
This week’s story belongs to the small business owners who keep downtown Harrisburg interesting.
In a recent feature, local shop owners on North Third Street shared how they are preparing for the holiday season in the middle of online competition and rising costs. One of them, Kenzie Brinkman of The Meadow, talked about what happens when you choose to shop local instead of hitting a giant website.
When someone walks through her door, they are not just buying a candle or a card. They are talking to a neighbor, trading stories, and sometimes even swapping recommendations for other nearby shops. A quick errand turns into a short conversation. People leave with something they like and a little more connection than they had when they walked in.
That is the quiet magic of local business in the 717. It is not just about keeping dollars in the community. It is about recognizing that the people behind the counters are trying to make this region warmer and more human, one tiny purchase at a time.
If there is a local shop, diner, barber, or café that feels like “your place,” hit reply and tell us about them. We might feature them in a future issue.
🟩 Good to Know
Fall leaf season is beautiful and also a little slippery. Trails at places like Wildwood Park and along the riverfront can stay damp under thick leaves, especially in the morning. If you are heading out for a weekend walk or volunteer shift, wear shoes with decent grip and keep an eye out for slick spots.
Bonus tip for budget minded plans in Harrisburg: street parking in many parts of downtown is free after 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and often free on Sundays. Always double check the signs on your block, but this can make an evening concert or dinner a little easier on your wallet.
🟧 Quiz
Quiz Time:
Tell us what kind of Pennsylvania weekender you are.
If you had to pick one, which would you choose:
A) Craft beers and classic cars at Autos and Ales
B) A night of big symphony sound at the Forum
C) Gloves on and hands dirty at a Wildwood volunteer shift
D) Seed swap and plant talk at the Giant community room
Hit reply and tell us your pick and why. We read every answer, and your replies help us choose what to highlight next.
That’s it for today’s issue.
You have officially survived the hardest part of the week. Enjoy the rest of your Wednesday, plan something fun for the weekend, and if you see someone walking into Wildwood with a travel mug in one hand and a rake in the other, say hi. It might be us, pretending it is all for “research.”
